Munnings’ Constantia Wins Mizdirection
It was a second stakes winner in 24 hours for Munnings on Saturday when Constantia (4f Munnings x Llandudno, by Belong To Me) added a stakes victory to her record in the Listed Mizdirection Stakes.
Finishing third in her stakes debut last out, the Keith Abrahams homebred cut back half a furlong in a move that proved to be a wise decision. Breaking from post position three, Constantia immediately took her spot at the rear as the leaders dueled over five lengths in front of her.
Ridden confidently by Umberto Rispoli, as they turned into the stretch Constantia was ready to run but had to fight for space before she could flash her speed. Jostled while going through a hole didn’t stop the filly, who was traveling best of all once clear of those rivals.
It didn’t take her long to pass the leader and she continued to pull away in the final sixteenth to win by an easy 1 ½ lengths.
“She was the toughest one,” said Rispoli. “She’s like that, sits in the back and you forget about her, at the three eighths pole and she starts to warm up. Down the stretch, just be careful to find a spot and she does the rest. I mean she works pretty good.”
Trained by John Sadler, it was her third win of the year with the filly’s four starts in 2021 also yielding a third for $115,152 in 2021 earnings and $149,752 overall.
Constantia is out of the Grade III-placed Llandudno, who herself is also a half-sister to stakes-placed Crafty Ang.
It’s been a big April for Munnings, who is now the sire of three stakes winners this month in addition to stakes placed Letsgetlucky. Led by Grade I winner Kimari, Munnings also saw Bonny South win the Grade III Doubledogdare Stakes on Friday.
