Practical Joke Colt Determined in G3 Tampa Bay Derby Victory
A successful week for Practical Joke and Klaravich Stables continued Saturday when the racing owner’s homebred Domestic Product (3c Practical Joke x Goods and Services, by Paynter) won the Grade III Tampa Bay Derby.
The 1 1/16-mile dirt race saw Domestic Product well rated between horses in fifth just a few lengths off the leader. Eager to run throughout the race, Domestic Product was let loose as the field made its way into the stretch and he swung wider. The dueling leaders quickly saw the winner approach as he came up with his own rival to his outside in a wild dash for the finish.
It was a four-horse race to the line with Domestic Product getting in front just in time with Uncle Mo’s Grand Mo The First not far off the winner in third.
Already earning Road to the Kentucky Derby points last out when second in the Grade III Holy Bull, the Chad Brown trainee continued to climb the leaderboard on Saturday with this win to earn 50 points. The additional points puts him third overall on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Practical Joke son Proprietary Trade was also a Klaravich Stables winner this week when romping home by 4 ¾ lengths in an Aqueduct Maiden Special Weight on Thursday.
Domestic Product is one of two winners from two to race out of a half-sister to stakes winner Kenda. The colt’s stakes winning second dam is also a full sister to Grade III winner Cherokee Queen, who produced two stakes performers herself.
Practical Joke’s five stakes winners in 2024 puts him second among all North American sires with the stallion’s eight stakes performers sixth best of everyone.
