Practical Joke Makes Waves at Fasig-Tipton October
Practical Joke had the second most expensive yearling by a first-crop sire during Tuesday’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale session with his colt out of Popstar selling for $135,000.
Bought by Kubler Racing, the Taylor Made-consigned colt is a grandson of Group III Queen Mary runner-up Catstar and the second foal out of his winning Medaglia d’Oro dam Popstar. Catstar has produced five winners from six to race with one of her other daughters producing stakes-placed Gru.
Multiple graded stakes winning third dam Advancing Star is also the dam of six winners with Grade I-placed Fair Advantage having 10 winners herself, including three stakes winners and four stakes horses.
Bred by Lauren West, Val A. Henson and Potomac Bloodstock LLC, a similar cross has already found success on the track. The colt bred on the same Into Mischief x Medaglia d’Oro cross as stakes winner and Grade I Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint hopeful Into Mystic among three winners from only a handful to race.
Practical Joke’s average of $121,735 for 70 yearlings sold, led by a $575,000 colt and $320,000 filly, is among the leading freshman sires this yearling sales season.
