Practical Joke Mare Easy Winner of Bold Ego
Chesterette (5m Practical Joke x Jenny’s So Great, by Greatness) gave Practical Joke his first stakes winner of the year on Friday with a victory in the Bold Ego Handicap at Sunland Park.
Coming into the race off an Allowance victory, the mare was happy to watch a pair of dueling leaders as they set the pace in the 5 ½ furlong dirt race. She had nearly four lengths to make up going into the turn and loomed large as she raced wide to have enough clear space to make a serious run.
The Bart Hone trainee was able to wrangle control in mid-stretch and started pulling away from the field to win by 2 ¾ lengths in the end.
It was the fourth win in 10 starts for Chesterette, who has also finished on the board in three other starts including the Arizona Oaks.
Bought by racing owners Holly and David Wilson for $300,000 from Julie Davies as a 2-year-old, she was also a $165,000 yearling from breeder Woods Edge Farm at Keeneland.
Chesterette is out of the Grade III winner Jenny’s So Great, who has two winners from her four to race. She’s one of two stakes winners out of Jenny’s Search, who another daughter produce the stakes winning duo of Unbridled Victory and Super Jen.
Practical Joke’s 18 Northern Hemisphere-foaled stakes winners and 43 stakes performers is second only to Gun Runner while his 191 winners overall is the best among his peers.
