Quincy Cafe Newest Winner for Mendelssohn
The winners kept rolling in for Mendelssohn on Sunday when Quincy Cafe (2c Mendelssohn x Toni’s Hollyday, by Harlan’s Holiday) won a Maiden Special Weight at Laurel Park.
It was the third start for the chestnut colt, who was stretching out to seven furlongs for the first time after starts at five and six furlongs. Racing at the back of the pack, the colt didn’t start making a move until the turn but quickly picked off rivals when asked to go.
Racing wide off the turn, he had to duel with another runner and finished second by a nose but was elevated to first after an inquiry.
A $140,000 OBS March purchase earlier this year, Quincy Cafe is trained by Lacey Gaudet for K E M Racing Stable. The colt was bred by Castleton Lyons, Kilboy Estate, and Gavin Tierney out of multiple stakes-placed Toni’s Hollyday. That mare has three winners from four to race, led by the stakes winning Chi Town Lady.
The mare’s page also includes multiple Grade III winners and Grade I-placed May Day Rose and Roza Robata, Grade III winner Nice to Meet You and others.
A Grade I-winning juvenile and record-setter at three, Mendelssohn has sired three winners in the last five days and five winners overall, tying him near the top of a leaderboard that includes fellow Scat Daddy son and Triple Crown winner Justify.
