Sir Alfred James 55th Stakes Winner for Munnings
Munnings started the year on a high note when Sir Alfred James (6g Munnings x Super Phoebe, by Malabar Gold) became his 55th career stakes winner in the Holiday Cheer Stakes at Turfway Park.
Already stakes placed last year, Sir Alfred James made sure this one wasn’t going to get away from him. He went straight to the lead in the six furlong synthetic race and was well in command throughout. Never truly challenged, Sir Alfred James spent the stretch run pulling away to win easily by 6 ¼ lengths as the race favorite.
Trained by Norman Cash for Built Wright Stables, it was the sixth win in 18 starts for the Munnings son, who has $484,034 in career earnings.
Sir Alfred James was bred in Kentucky by Mt. Joy Stables, Pope McLean, Marc McLean, and Pope McLean Jr. in 2016 out of the nine-time winner Super Phoebe.
Sir Alfred James is the second stakes winner for his dam, who also produced three-time Grade I winner and $2.75 million mare Got Stormy and stakes-placed Sky Gold. His dam is also a half-sister to two Grade II winners in Smooth Air and Overdriven.
He’s the second big winner of the day for Munnings, who also saw Lookin At Lucky’s half-sister Shahama win the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial earlier in the day.
