Six In A Row for Mendelssohn’s Wings Of Song

It was a sixth straight victory for Sandy Tait and Jill Nivison’s homebred Wings Of Song (3f Mendelssohn x Tortoni, by Strategic) on Saturday with a two length victory in the Group III Auraria Stakes.

Closing late in the 1 1/8-mile turf race at Morphettville, the filly confronted the leader just inside the final furlong and the race was all but over from there. She easily pulled away from the rest of the field after receiving a few taps and proved to be much the best.

Trained by Patrick Payne, the filly’s win streak has included four stakes victories and a victory in the 1000 Guineas at Hobart as well. In all, she has won seven of 12 starts for AU$413,180 in earnings.

A half-sister to Group II winner Cherry Tortoni and Churchill’s stakes-placed Jenny Jerome, Wings of Song is out of a half-sister to Australian champion Tie The Knot and the stakes winning Hood and Dream Ballad.

Mendelssohn has sired three worldwide stakes winners in 2024 with seven stakes performers. Among those horses are two graded stakes winners and Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile third Ah Jeez.
