Mendelssohn Back To Stables

Sixteen Represent Mendelssohn at OBS Spring

Mendelssohn’s first crop is represented by a large group of 16 juveniles at this week’s OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds, kicking off on Tuesday.

Mendelssohn’s first through the ring comes from Woodford Thoroughbreds as Hip 163. The :20.3 breezer out of the stakes winning Banker’s Buy comes from the family of champion Mitole and Grade I winner Hot Rod Charlie among others. A $120,000 Keeneland September yearling and bred by Kathryn Nikkel and Sanford Robertson, the colt is a half-brother to three winners from four to race out of their dam.

A filly with international appeal is Hip 230 out of Fastnet Rock’s Group III-placed Cana from Ocala Stud. Bred by Spendthrift Farm, the filly has a strong Australian family as a member of Group I winner Wanted’s family.

Cana is a half-sister to stakes winner Interspersed with their Tale of the Cat dam a half-sister to Wanted and Group III winner Shrapnel. Each of the filly’s four dams on the page are stakes performers, stakes producers, or both.

Top Line Sales’ Hip 275 is a half-brother to Grade II winner and Grade I Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf second Untamed Domain – who finished second to Mendelssohn in that race. This colt is out of the multiple stakes winning Ciao, a granddaughter of the Grade I winning Smuggly, who had three daughters who went on to produce stakes winners or stakes producers.

Group III winner Experience has produced four winners from five to race so far and Hip 419 will look to become her next winner after going through the OBS ring. The colt was only a neck away from receiving a stakes update on Friday when half-sister Lost My Sock finished fourth in the Listed Limestone Stakes at Keeneland. Experience is one of two stakes winners for her own dam, who also produced Tellovoi. Others on the page include champion Kundalini and Group II winner Shadow Diva.

Lucan Bloodstock sends Hip 809 through the ring, a gray Louisiana-bred out of a Tapit full sister to multiple graded stakes winner Hightap. Hightap has also proved her skills as a producer as the dam of Grade I winner Halladay while this colt’s dam, Mum, is the dam of three winners from three to race. There are stakes winners under three of the four dams on Hip 809’s page, including Canadian Horse of the Year Norcliffe.

Mendelssohn’s final through the ring is Hip 1206, a filly out of Touched. That mare has proven to be a successful producer with five winners from eight to race including the Grade II winning Indiana Firewater. Consigned by Brick City Thoroughbreds, the John and Melissa Mulholland-bred juvenile has stakes winnrs under two of her three dams listed on the page with the only dam not in that category winning stakes races herself.

The OBS Spring Sale kicks off at 10:30a.m. ET on Tuesday and runs through Friday.
