Spankerboom Newest Winner for Mendelssohn
It was a Coolmore-sired 1-2 finish in a Churchill Downs Maiden Special Weight when Spankerboom (2f Mendelssohn x Spanker, by Capo Blanco) led home Tiz The Law’s Book’em by 1 ½ lengths.
Racing over 4 ½ furlongs on the Churchill Downs dirt, Spankerboom wasn’t worried about going wide almost from the gate when going six wide into the turn. Moving a few paths in around the turn, she had the lead with just over a quarter left to run and was set for an even bigger stretch run.
The filly had built her lead by the time they hit the final furlong with just Book’em running her down to 1 1/2 lengths at the line, the third placed runner 4 ¾ lengths behind the runner-up.
Trained by John Alexander Ortiz, she is a homebred for Poindexter Thoroughbreds out of Spanker.
A stakes placed runner herself, Spanker is a half-sister to the multiple graded stakes placed Delta’s Kingdom with five winners from seven starters.
This is the third juvenile winner of the year for Mendelssohn from seven starters, putting him fourth among all North American sires alongside Mo Town and Munnings.
