Speedy Sioux Nation Filly Captures Cornwallis Stakes

Coto De Caza (2f Sioux Nation – Coto, by Fast Company) continued a smart run for Sioux Nation when running out a taking winner of the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes on Friday.

The €270,000 breeze-up buy got off the mark in fine style in July and followed up in a Class 2 at Goodwood two weeks later. Third in a Listed sprint last time out, she was reunited with Harry Davis at Newmarket and raced in second on the stands’ side, after the field split into two groups.

Shaken up to lead before the two furlong pole, she was ridden a furlong later and kept on well to score by three parts of a length. At the opposite side, Grande Marques (Starspangledbanner) claimed runners-up honours, with over three lengths back to the third.

“She did that really well and travelled superbly,” said Ed Crisford, who trains the winner with his father Simon. “She came down the stands' side and it was hard to know if she was in front or not, but she's a talented filly and she did it very gamely in the end.

“I think she still has some growing to do and she's a quick filly, but we will have to see how she winters and how she comes through that and then make a plan from there. I would say she would be done [for the season] now.” Looking further ahead, he added, “You have all those good five-furlong races you can aim at next year, she's a Group 3 winner now and we can aim high. Whether she ends up in a King's Stand or something like that, I don't know.”

Owned by Mohammed Sultan and bred by Matthew Tynan, Coto De Caza becomes Sioux Nation’s fourth Stakes winner in the space of a week.
