Updates Galore for Mendelssohn Juveniles at OBS March
The Grade I-winning, blue-blooded Mendelssohn is set to make a splash this week when his first 13 juveniles go through the ring at the OBS March 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale on March 15-16.
His first through the ring is representing Kirkwood Stables after breezing a :10.2 this weekend. The colt is the third out of the multiple stakes winning R Frosty One, who is out of a half-sister to the multiple graded stakes placed Imawildandcrazyguy.
Consigned by Kings Equine for Spendthrift Farm, Hip 115 out of Shannon Faith comes into the ring with an update. The colt’s third dam Felicita is also the dam of Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady, whose American Pharoah daughter As Time Goes By won the Grade I Beholder Mile last weekend.
A $130,000 short yearling purchase at Keeneland January, the colt’s dam is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes-placed Northern Giant. The family also includes champions Will Take Charge and Take Charge Brandi and Grade I winners Omaha Beach and Take Charge Indy among others.
Only 10 days after her half-brother Simplification won the Grade II Fountain of Youth, the March-born filly out of stakes-placed Simply Confection sells as Hip 125 from Niall Brennan Stables. Simply Confection is also a half-sister to the dam of Scat Daddy’s multiple stakes winner Inflexibility and stakes winner Halo Again among others. The filly was one of three Mendelssohn juveniles to breeze in :10.0 during the Under Tack Show.
“She is very smooth, very intelligent. These Mendelssohns, the ones I have anyway, are very professional, very focused. They all show the same kind of consistency and class. They are all very good movers. She acts that way, very easy, a really classy filly. She has great action on the racetrack. She moves great on the dirt. All the Mendelssohns I have, I think they will go on either surface from the way they are training,” Brennan told Thoroughbred Daily News.
A $250,000 Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearling Sale graduate last year, Mendelssohn’s daughter of Good Omen goes through the ring as Hip 468 from Top Line Sales. The filly is the second out of a half-sister to the stake winning Philanthrophic. This is also the family of dual Horse of the Year Curlin and stakes winning Conquest Strate Up among others.
Bred by Spendthrift Farm, Hip 478 consigned by Kings Equine is a half-brother to Barraza, who won the Grade III San Simeon Stakes on February 20 – his fourth straight victory. That 4-year-old is by Mendelssohn’s dual champion sire half-brother Into Mischief. This colt is also out of Grade II victress and 18-time winner overall Halo Dolly.
Out of a stakes winning half-sister to champion Kalanisi comes Hip 535 from Britton Peak. A three-quarter brother himself to stakes-placed Kadar, the colt is out of Kaloura, who was also Group II-placed. Kaloura is one of three stakes winners for Kalamba, whose daughters also produced stakes winners Kalaxana, Luminate, and Burano, among others.
A half-sister to the stakes winning South of France, Hip 617 goes through the ring with stakes winners under each of her four listed dams. Another one of those stakes winners is her own stakes winning dam Miss Derek. That mare’s dam is a half sister to the stakes winner and Grade I-placed Touch Tone and the dams of two other stakes winners.
Consigned by Kirkwood Stables, the filly is scheduled to be Mendelssohn’s last hip through the ring.
In all, 10 of Mendelssohn’s 2-year-olds go through the ring with updates, including three who have relatives with new wins at the graded stakes level.
The sale kicks off on Tuesday at 10:30a.m. ET with the second group going through the ring starting at the same time the following day.
