Valentina Day Wins Turfway Maiden Special Weight
It was winner number 21 for Cupid on Thursday when Valentina Day (2f Cupid x One In a Romp, by Cryptoclearance) won a Maiden Special Weight at Turfway Park.
Making her second start for owner Andrew Warren, Valentina Day was stretching to 1 1/16 miles after a debut over one mile at Churchill Downs in November. The filly split the field three lengths off the leader for much of the running with Gerardo Corrales setting her up perfectly for a late run.
Though she was on the wrong lead in the stretch, the juvenile was too good for the rest of the field with a 1 ¼ length win and only two horses within six lengths of her at the end.
Trained by Ben Colebrook, Valentina Day was a $130,000 weanling purchase by Patrice Miller from breeder Runnymede Farm at Keeneland November.
The filly is one of five winners out of the stakes placed One in a Romp, who is a three-quarter sister to Grade I Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Volponi. One in a Romp is also a half-sister to stakes winners Jonesy Boy and Pinch Pie with Pinch Pie also placed at the Grade I level.
Cupid’s 21 worldwide winners and two stakes winners is in the top five among all North American-based freshman sires in 2021.
