Wings of Song Wins Strutt For Fourth Straight Victory

Mendelssohn daughter Wings of Song (3f Mendelssohn x Tortoni, by Strategic) won her fourth in a row on Sunday with a victory in the Strutt Stakes in Australia.

Racing a little over 1 ¼ miles on the Hobart turf, the Mendelssohn daughter was up for the challenge of running down the leader down the stretch. Collaring that one as they tackled the final quarter mile, she entered into a duel as they turned into the straight.

She overtook that horse with under a sixteenth left and the line came in time to stop another challenger with Wings of Song winning by a head.

Bred by Sandy Tait and Jill Nivison, Wings of Song is trained by Patrick Payne for her breeders and was winning her second stakes in this affair. In all, she has won five of 10 starts with three other top three finishes for over AU$240,000 in earnings.

Wings of Song is out of the winning mare Tortoni, who also produced Group II winner Cherry Tortoni and Churchill’s stakes-placed Jenny Jerome.

Tortoni is a half-sister to Australian champion Tie The Knot and the stakes winning Hood and Dream Ballad.

The dam of five winners from five to race, 14-year-old Tortoni had a St Mark’s Basilica filly last year before being bred back to Churchill for a full sibling to Jenny Jerome.

Mendelssohn is the sire of eight stakes winners from his first two crops with 22 other worldwide stakes performers coming in three countries. That group includes this year’s Grade III UAE 2000 Guineas winner Mendelssohn Bay.
