Wound Up Continues Mendelssohn’s Hot Streak
The winners kept pouring in for Mendelssohn on Thursday when Wound Up (2c Mendelssohn x Banker’s Buy, by Distorted Humor) won a Del Mar Maiden Special Weight on debut.
Wound Up shot to the lead soon after the break in the five furlong turf race, weathering pressure throughout the race. The Reddam Racing representative never bowed down, keeping two others at bay down the stretch for a neck win in the end.
Wound Up is trained by Michael McCarthy for Reddam and had put in a strong set of works before his debut, including a Santa Anita bullet and a second best of 86 at Del Mar two weeks ago. Bred by Kathryn Nikkel and Sanford Robertson, the colt was a $280,000 2-year-old purchase at OBS April this year.
He is the fourth winner out of the stakes winning Banker’s Buy, who is a half-sister to stakes winners City Dweller and Glacken’s Gal. In addition to producing Grade II winner Live Lively, Glacken’s Gal also produced the dam of champion Mitole and Grade I winner Hot Rod Charlie.
Banker’s Buy returned to Mendelssohn this year for her 2023 foal.
In just the past two weeks, Mendelssohn has sired six winners and overall sits at eight from his first crop with that putting him third among this year’s North American freshmen.
