Domestic Product
Domestic Product had an unusual record for a winner of the Gr.1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial, a highly competitive event over seven furlongs. Ten months earlier the homebred son of Practical Joke had gained his first success, at the second attempt, with a clear-cut victory over a mile and an eighth at Belmont at Aqueduct. His connections were happy to keep him at distances beyond a mile and he generally performed very creditably, finishing ahead of champion 2YO Fierceness when second in the Gr.3 Holy Bull Stakes prior to winning the Gr.3 Tampa Bay Derby over 11⁄16 miles. The mile and a quarter of the Kentucky Derby proved beyond him and we didn’t see the real Domestic Product until he was dropped back to a mile in the Gr.3 Dwyer Stakes, just as his sire Practical Joke had done after finishing fifth in the Kentucky Derby. Practical Joke won the Dwyer, and his son won even more impressively, romping home by 7½ lengths. The parallels between father and son continued when they dropped back further in distance in Saratoga’s H. Allen Jerkens Memorial and both were successful again in this seven-furlong contest.
As a son of Practical Joke and grandson of Into Mischief, Domestic Product can be expected to work his way up through the ranks as a stallion. Into Mischief was famously transformed from a $7,500 stallion into a multiple champion sire standing at $250,000, while Practical Joke is also upwardly mobile after being represented in 2024 by such as Ways And Means, Mufasa and Domestic Product.
The parallels between Domestic Product and his sire are likely to continue in his new career. He will be easy to use, as STORM CAT, MR PROSPECTOR and DANZIG are back in the fifth generation of his pedigree and SEATTLE SLEW is even further back.
Twelve of Into Mischief’s Gr.1 winners are from MR PROSPECTOR line mares, with Practical Joke representing Into Mischief’s flourishing partnership with Distorted Humor mares. Practical Joke’s accomplished sprinter Skelly is out of a mare by Indian Charlie’s son BWANA CHARLIE. Practical Joke also has a couple of black-type performers out of UNCLE MO mares.
Domestic Product could also suit TIZNOW mares, as Into Mischief has sired Gr.1 winner Played Hard from a TIZNOW mare and Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup winner Wonder Wheel from a daughter of TIZ WONDERFUL.
Into Mischief is having success with the HAIL TO REASON line. Daughters of MORE THAN READY have 21% BTWs with him, while ARCH mares have two BTWs among their 11 foals (18%) by Into Mischief. Mares by Arch’s son BLAME have also made a promising start with him. Practical Joke has the Gr.3 winner Little Vic out of a mare by Kris S.’s son ROCK HARD TEN.
