Munnings

A high-class sprinter like his sire Speightstown, Munnings has played a leading role in establishing Speightstown as a sire of sires. He has done so with racing-age progeny sired at fees between $10,000 and $40,000, so his best years may still be ahead of him, when his higher-priced crops race from 2025. It’s a reflection of his success that his 2024 yearlings averaged over $200,000.

An exciting aspect on Munnings’ success is that he sired the Gr.2 winners Finite and Bonny South from daughters of champion sire TAPIT, who is also the broodmare sire of his TDN Rising Star Muhimma.

Munnings 2024 sales yearlings included a $700,000 filly out of a TAPIT mare. Speightstown’s Gr.1 winner Lexitonian and Gr.3 winner Scalable are others out of TAPIT mares. Munnings also has a Gr.3 winner from only 4 foals out of A.P. INDY mares and is building some impressive statistics with mares by sons of A.P. INDY. In addition to having 35% BTWs among his nine foals out of mares by FLATTER and 15% BTWs from mares by CONGRATS, his runners out of mares by BERNARDINI include Gr.2 winner Scaramouche and Munnings’ 2024 yearlings out of BERNARDINI mares included colts which sold for $975,000 and $625,000. Munnings’ 2024 2yo Gr.1-placed daughter So There She Was has a dam by TAKE CHARGE INDY. Munnings clearly merits more mares from the A.P. INDY line. Speightstown’s seven black-type winners out of daughters of A.P. INDY include four Graded winners, headed by Gr.1 winner Flagstaff.

With daughters of Holy Bull and Lord At War as his first two dams, Munnings has plenty of options. He sired his first Gr.1 winner, that fine filly I’m A Chatterbox, from a grand-daughter of DANZIG and he also has Graded winners out of daughters of HARD SPUN and BELONG TO ME. More mares from the DANZIG male line should suit this fast horse, as Speightstown sired the Gr.1 winners Jersey Town and Seek Again from mares by BELONG TO ME and DANEHILL. Speightstown also has Graded winners out of daughters of DANZIG, DAYJUR, ZIETEN, ORPEN, HONOR GRADES and SEA HERO. This suggests daughters of WAR FRONT, LANGFUHR, EXCHANGE RATE and WAR CHANT could suit Munnings.

Speightstown has Gr.2 and Gr.3 winners inbred 3x3 to STORM CAT and a Gr.1 winner inbred 3x4. Munning’s excellent Gr.1 winner Jack Christopher is also inbred 4x4. Munnings also has Graded winners out of grand-daughters of STORM CAT sired by FORESTRY, TABASCO CAT, FREUD, GIANT’S CAUSEWAY and AFTER MARKET. Munnings’ first five starters out of INTO MISCHIEF mares include Listed winner Swill. The Holy Bull/Great Above blood in his pedigree should suit SCAT DADDY mares and he already has a Graded-placed LW out of one.
Munnings’ results suggest he has a future with mares descending from SADLER’S WELLS. He has a Gr.2 winner with a dam by EL PRADO and he also has four BTWs plus the 2024 Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprintthird Pleasant with MEDAGLIA D’ORO mares. A 2023 yearling filly out of a MEDAGLIA D’ORO mare made $775,000.

Speightstown also has an excellent record with MEDAGLIA D’ORO mares, with the Gr.1 winners Prince of Monaco, Rock Fall, Olympiad and Competitionofideas among his 11 black-type winners (15%). As Munnings has BTWs out of mares by three different sons of EL PRADO, mares by KITTEN’S JOY are another option for him.

Speightstown has several good performers inbred either 3x3 or 3x4 to MR PROSPECTOR, including Travers Stakes winner Golden Ticket, dual Gr.1 winner Charlatan, Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Tamarkuz, Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Olympiad and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Sharing. There is therefore no obstacle to sending mares with Mr Prospector blood to Munnings. He has the Gr.2 winner Venetian Harbor out of a STREET CRY mare, plus a Gr.2-placed filly with a dam by STREET SENSE. Munnings also has BTWs from the UNBRIDLED, GONE WEST, SMART STRIKE, FORTY NINER and KINGMAMBO branches, with dual Gr.1 winner Jack Christopher being out of a grand-daughter of UNBRIDLED’S SONG. Munnings’ Gr.1 winner EDA has a dam by LEMON DROP KID.

Speightstown has two BTWs out of INDIAN CHARLIE mares, including the speedy Gr.1 winner Switzerland. Now Munnings has sired the Gr.1 winner Howard Wolowitz from 7 foals out of daughters of UNCLE MO.

The DEPUTY MINISTER branch has plenty of potential, as Speightstown sired the Travers Stakes winner Golden Ticket from a DEPUTY MINISTER mare and he is also one of three sons of Gone West to have sired a Gr.1 winner from mares by sons of Deputy Minister.

Munnings has had stakes success with mares by SALT LAKE and SILVER DEPUTY.
