£185,000 Mastercraftsman colt tops Doncaster sale
A first-crop son of four-time G1 winner Mastercraftsman stole the show at Doncaster’s 2012 Premier Yearling Sale on Thursday when selling for £185,000.
Out of the Forest Wildcat mare Weekend Fling, the striking colt was offered from Denis and Joan Brosnan’s Croom House Stud and had many admirers.
It was Eddie Fitzpatrick of Coolmore who eventually landed the successful bid with Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown, accompanied by trainer Marco Botti, the underbidder.
Fitzpatrick told EBN: “We’ll take him home to join the rest of the Coolmore yearlings and decide on his future at the end of the sales season. Demi [O’Byrne] and MV [Magnier] saw the colt earlier this week and liked him and we all agreed he was one of the best here. We’re very excited by Mastercraftsman’s first crop of yearlings. This horse was beautifully prepared by a great nursery.”
Denis Brosnan added: “We’ve had some great results today, but we picked the right horses for Doncaster – horses that will win as two-year-olds. The Mastercraftsman was a great example, and David Wachman, who trains his half-sister [Royal Empress], thinks she’s the real thing. Once we saw this colt on the ground as a foal we went straight back to Mastercraftsman. I said then that if he couldn’t make it as a stallion nothing would. It’s been a really good effort by Paul [McCartan, Croom manager] and all the team to produce the horses ready for sale.”
The Doncaster sale-topper followed an excellent Arqana Yearling Sale at Deauville at which Mastercraftsman’s first crop made €230,000, €150,000, €120,000, €115,000 etc.
