Another Stellar Sale For Starspangledbanner At Book 2
Starspangledbanner enjoyed another terrific sale at Tattersalls Book 2, where Ballyvolane Stud’s chesnut colt sold to Richard Knight for 600,000gns.
Knight has been a major player at the 2022 yearling sales, and was once again acting on behalf of a mystery client when securing Lot 1321. “He was the only horse we really picked out in this sale,” the agent revealed “We thought he was a lovely individual and I’m a big fan of Starspangledbanner having bought The Wow Signal.”
The pricey colt marked an impressive return as the first foal out of 28,000gns purchase Great Dame, who has a filly foal by Churchill.
Chasemore Farm are familiar with Richard Knight’s Group 1 winning purchase The Wow Signal (Starspangledbanner), having bought his half-sister Wowcha (Zoffany) and from whom they subsequently bred Group 3 performer Breege (Starspangledbanner). The operation continued their success with the sire on Tuesday, when selling Breege’s full-brother to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for 550,000gns.
Speaking after the sale, Chasemore manager Jack Conroy said, “This colt has been fantastic and we’ve never had so many vettings on a horse, even in Book 1. He passed all the scrutiny thankfully and Mick Kinane loved him.”
Explaining what initially drew the team to Starspangledbanner, Conroy said, “The Wow Signal was an unbelievable racehorse and the mare was lovely and scopey so it made a lot of sense to send her to Starspangledbanner, who’s a proven stallion at a very reasonable price considering his results.”
Other notable sales for Starspangledbanner over the three days included Hugo Merry’s 340,00gns purchase of New England Stud’s speedily bred filly.
The globetrotting son of Choisir ended the sale with an impressive average price of 155,300gns.
