Fastnet Rock Colt Triumphs In King George V Stakes
The progressive Surefire (3c Fastnet Rock - Modesta, by Sadler’s Wells) tasted big race success on Thursday when landing the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Successful over a mile as a two-year-old, the Juddmonte homebred impressed over ten furlongs last time out and stepped up to a mile and a half at the Royal meeting. Racing wide under Hector Crouch, the Ralph Beckett-trained bay made headway from three furlongs out and was ridden approaching the final furlong. Leading close home, he kept on well to hold off the favourite Sir Lamorak (Camelot) by a neck on the line.
Speaking after the race, the winning trainer said, “Surefire came from a long way back and was stuck wide so hopefully we can upgrade this. Hopefully he can go on from here and you never know he could turn up at South Yorkshire in early September.”
