First Crop Of Superstar Highland Reel Make Yearling Sale Debut
Yearling buyers will need no reminding of the globetrotting exploits of superstar Highland Reel when his first crop go under the hammer at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale next week.
A Group 2 winning juvenile, the son of Galileo captured seven Group 1 contests in the UK, US and Hong Kong, including when going out on a high in the Hong Kong Vase as a five-year-old. Those victories and gallant runs in defeat saw the beautifully-bred bay amass nearly €9,500,000 in prize money - more than any other European-trained colt in history.
A pair of well-related fillies represent Highland Reel in the first European yearling sale of the year. First up is Lot 113 from Highclere Stud, who is the first foal out of three-time winner Bonnie Arlene, herself a half-sister to Listed winner Yamal. Prince Of Wales’s Stakes victor Faithful Son, Coventry Stakes winner Always Fair and three-time Group 1 winner Lailani feature further down the page.
John Troy consigns Lot 120, a bay filly out of a half-sister to Group 3 Greenham Stakes third Bronterre, who also finished fourth in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes. Her page is littered with familiar names, including top-class sprinter Committed and multiple Grade 1 winner English Channel.
Highland Reel’s first crop proved popular at last year’s foal sales, with a pair of colts reaching six-figure sums at Tattersalls in December. Shrewd pinhookers were keen to secure his progeny, with the likes of JC Bloodstock, Manister House Stud and Norris & Huntingdon securing his stock.
