Galileo Colt Boosts Derby Claims With Impressive Stakes Success
The Martyn Meade-trained Lone Eagle (3c Galileo - Modernstone, by Duke Of Marmalade) produced an impressive front-running performance in the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood.
The son of Galileo won three of his four juvenile starts, including in the Group 3 Zetland Stakes, and finished a promising fourth on return to action last month. Stepping up to a mile and three furlongs on Friday, he was ridden to make all by Silvestre De Sousa and begn to quicken from three furlongs out. Clear over a furlong from home, he ran on well to win by four lengths, his rivals strung out behind him.
“He's a relentless galloper,” Meade later commented. “The Epsom and Irish Derby are possibilities and our end game might be the St Leger. He's such a good horse.”
Lone Eagle is owned by Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm, with the Irish farm buying him in utero for 1,000,000gns.
