Gnat Alley 19th Winner for Caravaggio

Caravaggio continued extending his freshman winners lead on Wednesday when Gnat Alley (2f Caravaggio x Winter Snow, by Raven’s Pass) became his newest winner with a victory at Redcar in England.

Trying six furlongs for the first time, the Tim Easterby trainee proved to love the distance when racing just behind a duo of leaders. One of the pacesetters took a clear lead inside the final quarter and drifted away from the rail to give Gnat Alley her chance.

She quickly took advantage and galloped away in the final furlong with two horses trying to catch her late to no avail. Gnat Alley won by 1 ½ lengths for owner John Davies.

Bred by T Molan, Gnat Alley is the second winner from two to race out of Winter Snow, a half-sister to Group I winner Glen Shiel and Group III winner Signs In the Sand. Winter Snow’s Group III winning dam Gonfilia is the latest Group I producers in the family with her Group I winning half-sister Gonbarda the dam of multiple Group I winner Farhh.

Other mares in this family have also produced champions Fame And Glory and Legatissimo among others.

Now the sire of 19 winners, Caravaggio leads all North American freshmen by six winners with his studmate Practical Joke in second with 13 winners. Caravaggio’s six stakes performers is also the best of any North American freshman with the stallion having three stakes winners and one Group I performer.
