Impressive Newcomer Continues Fine Run For Wootton Bassett

Jewelry (2f Wootton Bassett – Simply A Star, by Giant’s Causeway) became the latest in a series of smart winners by Wootton Bassett when making a taking debut at Newbury on Friday afternoon.

The William Haggas-trained newcomer faced 12 rivals in the fillies’ novice stakes over six furlongs, a race previously won by the likes of Alcohol Free (No Nay Never). She was solely away under Cieren Fallon and soon raced in midfield, before making headway with two furlongs left to race. Ridden to lead approaching the final furlong, she kept on well to beat previous winner Toomuchforme by two and a half lengths, with another three and a half lengths back to the third.

We thought highly of her.” the winning rider revealed. “We just wanted to educate her and she had a hell of a blow, so she'll improve. We didn't think she'd do that, it's come off natural ability.

“It was very convincing and she's definitely a black-type filly in the making. She's got a lot of natural speed, so the further you go the more impressive she'll be.”

Owned by Isa Salman Al Khalifa and bred by Coolmore, Jewelry is a half-sister to the highly-rated Sir Lamorak (Camelot) and Group performer A New Dawn (Zoffany).

The previous day at Deauville, Maranoa Charlie (2c Wootton Bassett – Koubalibre, by Galileo) made an impressive debut in the valuable Arqana conditions race over seven furlongs.

Aurelien Lemaitre partnered the Christopher Head-trained favourite to a three-and-a-half length victory for owners Peter Maher, Carl Fitzgerald and John Baxter. The exciting colt was bred by Haras d’Etreham, Rivera Equine and Gestut zur Kuste out of the Galileo mare Koubalibre.

On Friday evening, the 94-rated Under Siege (3c Wootton Bassett – Sandra’s Secret, by Zebedee) was sent off favourite for the mile maiden and obliged by half a length under Danny Tudhope.

Andrew Balding’s charge had finished second to Economics, now a dual Group 2 winner, on debut, and filled the same position behind subsequent Group 3 winner Lead Artist on his next start.

The promising colt is owned by Clipper Logistics and was bred by Tally-Ho Stud.
