Progressive Churchill Colt Goes One Better At Naas
The improving Unconquerable (2c Churchill - Rien Ne Vas Plus, by Oasis Dream) followed up on two gallant seconds to take Saturday’s seven furlong maiden at Naas.
The Donnacha O’Brien-trained colt chased home subsequent Chesham Stakes winner Point Lonsdale (Australia) in a Curragh maiden and was beaten just a head by Hadman (Starspangledbanner) next time out, with the winner and third having gone on to win since.
Sent off favourite to go one better under Gavin Ryan, the bay tracked the leader and produced a challenge with two furlongs left to race. Ridden to lead inside the final furlong, he kept on well to win by a length.
“He deserved it as he’s bumped into a few nice ones,” O’Brien later commented. “Judging by that he’s still learning and probably wants a bit further. He’s going to be better next year as well.”
Owned by Atlantic Thoroughbreds, Unconquerable was purchased from Clare Castle Stud as a yearling for 210,000gns. He becomes the first winner out of Rien Ne Vas Plus, herself a half-sister to Epsom Derby victor North Light (Danehill).
Unconquerable becomes the third winner of the week by Churchill, following Once Upon A River’s impressive maiden win, while Ladies Church won her second start in a competitive contest at Tipperary.
