Progressive Churchill Colt Rallies For Group 2 Prize
The Foxes (2c Churchill - Tanaghum, by Darshaan) maintained an upward curve when prevailing in a thrilling finish to Saturday’s Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket.
The Andrew Balding-trained colt won his maiden over seven furlongs at Goodwood and stepped up to a mile at Newmarket, with David Probert aboard once more. Racing at the back of the field, he was switched right before the two furlong pole and was ridden to lead inside the final furlong. Digging deep close home, he held off his rivals by half a length on the line.
“I love the way The Foxes galloped out head down,” the winning trainer said after the race. On future plans, he added, “I would think that would be it for the year. He has got an entry in the Vertem Futurity Trophy, but I think he is a horse that will go on next year.”
Owned by King Power Racing, The Foxes was bought by Sackville Donald as a yearling for 440,000gns. Bred and sold by Barronstown Stud, the son of Churchill is a full-brother to Listed winner Perotan (Churchill) and is closely related to dual Group winner Bangkok (Australia).
