Son Of Galileo Completes Hat Trick With Group 3 Win

The Martyn Meade-trained Lone Eagle (2c Galileo - Modernstone, by Duke Of Marmalade) completed a hat-trick of wins when taking Saturday’s Group 3 Zetland Stakes at Newmarket.

A close second on debut in August, the bay went one better next time out and was last seen winning another mile contest at Doncaster. Stepping up to ten furlongs at the weekend, he raced prominently under Silvestre De Sousa and was ridden approaching the two furlong pole. Running on strongly in the final furlong, he scored by a length and three quarters, as the first two home finished seven lengths clear of the field.

De Sousa was impressed by the winner and later said, “It was a nice performance especially from a two-year-old in that ground. Lone Eagle galloped his heart out and has won his last three races now, so next year you'd be thinking of a Derby trial for him, and maybe the Derby too.”

Owned by breeder Ballylinch Stud in partnership with Aquis Farm, Lone Eagle is the first foal out of Group performer Modernstone. Modernstone was sold carrying the winner at Tattersalls, where she fetched 1,000,000gns.
