Kyprios (Galileo) Wins The Group 1 Goodwood Cup at Goodwood

Son Of Galileo Prevails In Goodwood Cup Thriller

Kyprios (4c Galileo - Polished Gem, by Danehill) battled back to capture a thrilling renewal of the Group 1 Goodwood Cup on Tuesday.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt was last seen gaining his first Group 1 victory in the Ascot Gold Cup, which took his record to five from seven. Dropping back to two miles at Goodwood, he was sent off favourite against two previous winners of the race and was ridden prominently by Ryan Moore. Leading from three furlongs out, he was ridden when challenged a furlong later and dug deep when briefly headed by Stradivarius, a four-time winner of the race. Running on strongly, Kyprios regained the advantage by a neck on the line, with another length and a quarter back to last year’s winner Trueshan in third.

“He's a horse who loves a fight,” O’Brien said after the race. “I'd say there's a lot more to come from him. He loves racing and is easy on himself. He's got a lot of class and quality and even though he ran two miles there and two and a half at Ascot, we would have had no problem starting him over a mile and a quarter next year.”

The Irish St Leger is next on the agenda for Kyprios, who is owned by breeder Moyglare Stud Farm with Magnier, Tabor, Smith and Westerberg. The son of Galileo is a full-brother to three Stakes winners, including dual Irish St Leger heroine Search For A Song (Galileo).
