Son Of Zoffany Gains Deserved Maiden Win

The Brian Meehan-trained Dominus (3c Zoffany - Gwen Lady Byron, by Dandy Man) gained a well-deserved maiden victory in Saturday’s seven furlong Novice Stakes at Goodwood.

Second on his two previous starts, the chesnut was ridden to lead by Jason Watson and increased the pace from over two furlongs out. The favourite Qutob made a strong challenge entering the final furlong, but Dominus dug deep to deny him by a neck, with a further five lengths back to the third horse.

Winning trainer Brian Meehan later commented, “Dominus likes to be in front and is very straightforward. He's grand and has been a little bit unlucky until now. Jason suggests we drop him back to six furlongs and I think that will suit him as there's a lot of speed in his pedigree.”

Owned by GPM Morland and JW Edgedale, Dominus does indeed have a speedy pedigree, having been bred by Morgan Cahalan from the family of top sprinter Gordon Lord Byron.
