Sottsass Filly Wins Maiden In Good Style
Veraison (2f Sottsass – Up In Time, by Noverre) took a step forward on her third start to get off the mark in the fillies’ maiden at Wolverhampton on Tuesday.
Trained by Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole for Chris Stedman, the €110,000 yearling was last seen finishing fourth in what looked a competitive Newbury maiden. Partnered by Benoit de la Sayette in Tuesday’s seven furlong contest, she led after two furlongs and kept on well inside the final furlong to win by a length. The favourite took second, while Rock Diva (Ten Sovereigns) made a promising debut in third.
The first crop daughter of Sottsass was bred by Roundhill Stud and JS Investments. She becomes her sire’s second smart winner, with Jean-Claude Rouget’s newcomer Ultrafragola (Sottsass) having drawn five and a half lengths clear at Deauville last month.
Sottsass’s second crop proved popular at last week’s Arqana August Sale, where four reached the €100,000 mark. The highlight was Oceanic Bloodstock’s €460,000 spend on a filly from Ecurie des Monceaux, while JS Bloodstock Consultancy went to €180,000 for another filly from Haras des Capucines.
