Starspangledbanner Colt Storms To Stakes Success
Maturlo (2c Starspangledbanner - Purlain, by Camelot) shaped like an exciting prospect on Tuesday when flying home to win the Listed Premio Giuseppe de Montel at San Siro.
The Antonio Marcialis-trained colt was making his third start in the seven furlong contest, with Andrea Mezzatesta employing a change of tactics and holding him up at the back of the field. He had five lengths to make up with a furlong left to race and powered home strongly to lead on the line.
Speaking after the race, the winning rider said, “He ran a couple of decent races and I was forced to wait. He enjoyed that and I was confident, even though he had a lot to do in the last 200m. I think he could improve a lot and stay a bit further.”
Bred by Societa Semplice Agricola de Pine, Maturlo is owned by Aladjan Hrand and Roberto Galizzi. He becomes a second Stakes winner in the space of a few days by Starspangledbanner, with his daughter Exxtra having won a Listed sprint at Deauville on Sunday.
