Technician Becomes The Latest Classic Hope For Mastercraftsman
Dante and Derby entries put Technician (3c Mastercraftsman - Arosa, by Sadler’s Wells) on a pedestal and he went some way to justifying connections’ lofty ambitions when impressing over a mile and a half at Leicester on Friday.
Major entries and a promising third on debut in November saw the Martyn Meade-trained colt sent off favourite, though his rivals included the unbeaten Themaxwecan and debut winner Landa Beach, who also holds an Epsom Derby entry.
Racing prominently in the early stages, he was encouraged to lead after two furlongs and increased the pace on the turn for home. Staying on well under Oisin Murphy, he ran on to win by three and a quarter lengths.
Bred by Barronstown Stud and owned by Manton Estate Racing, Technician was bought at the Goffs Orby Sale for €40,000. Closely related to two winners by Fastnet Rock, his dam is a winning full-sister to three-time Group winner Crimson Tide (Sadler’s Wells) and Group 3 Give Thanks Stakes winner Tamarind (Sadler’s Wells).
Technician continues a run of exciting winners by Mastercraftsman, with his daughter Villa D’Amore impressing at Chantilly, while Rudimental won on debut at Saint-Cloud. They follow Stakes victories by Santa Monica and Still Standing at Gulfstream Park and Naas respectively.
