Ten Sovereigns’ First Mares Prove Popular At Tattersalls
As mares in foal to No Nay Never commanded impressive prices at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale, so too did those carrying to his highest-rated son, Ten Sovereigns.
Unbeaten at two, just like his sire, Ten Sovereigns went on to win the Group 1 July Cup at three, and was one of the busiest new sires in 2020. Aperitif, a winning half-sister to Group 3 winner Yafta, from Lordship Stud’s Swiss Lake family, was among his stellar first book of mares. Offered as Lot 1555 on Tuesday, she was knocked down to agent Matt Coleman, who delivered a winning bid of 300,000gns on behalf of Noel O’Callaghan’s Mountarmstrong Stud.
Upon signing the docket, Coleman said, “Noel likes to buy quality mares with good pedigrees and Pivotal mares are hard to find. It’s a Lordship Stud family that not only produces racehorses but also commercial sales horses too.” Looking towards the future, he added, “Hopefully this mare will have a nice Ten Sovereigns colt that will sell well at Book 1 and recoup some of the investment made today.”
Four Leaf Clover (Lot 1654) was another well-related mare sent to Ten Sovereigns this year and was sold by John Troy to Badgers Bloodstock for 290,000gns. The daughter of Galileo is an own-sister to Irish St Leger winner Flag Of Honour and is a half-sister to another four Stakes horses.
Isabella Brant (Lot 1627) was one of three daughters of Mastercraftsman to fetch six-figure sums at Tattersalls, with Howson & Houldsworth Bloodstock stretching to 115,000gns for the grey offered by Mount Coote Stud in foal to Ten Sovereigns. The winning half-sister to Grade 1 runner-up Walk In Marrakesh hails from the family of top-class race mares Hydrangea (Galileo) and Hermosa (Galileo).
