The Gurkha Colt Heads German Derby Market After Impressive Display

Best Of Lips (3c The Gurkha - Beata, by Silver Frost) proved a class above his rivals in the Group 2 Union-Rennen, Sunday’s feature race at Cologne, and saw him become favourite for next month’s German Derby.

Coming into the race with two Group wins to his name, the Andreas Suborics-trained colt stepped up to a mile and three furlongs for the first time and raced in midfield for much of the way under Lukas Delozier. Shaken up with over two furlongs left to race, he led approaching the final furlong and soon raced clear, winning by four lengths and three quarters from Dolcetto (Gleneagles).

Sunday’s success sees Best Of Lips join an honour roll that includes Sea The Moon, Ivanhowe and Novellist. Owned by Stall Lintec and bred by Stall Parthenaue, he hails from the first crop of The Gurkha, himself also a top-class three-year-old.
