The Gurkha Colt Justifies Strong Support On Debut

Sugauli (2c The Gurkha - Wood Chorus, by Singspiel) justified strong market support when making a winning debut at Yarmouth on Tuesday.

Racing over seven furlongs, the bay was slowly into stride and raced towards the back of the field under Dane O’Neill. Making headway from over two furlongs out, he ran on well under pressure to lead inside the final furlong and won by half a length going away.

There should be more to come from Sugauli, given his admirable attitude and having overcome a slow start. Trained by Tom Clover for The Rogues Gallery, he was bred by Worksop Manor Stud and is a half-brother to Cambridgeshire Handicap runner-up Sands Chorus (Footstepsinthesand).

Sugauli hails from the first crop of top-class three-year-old The Gurkha, who on this week four years ago, won the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Though The Gurkha himself was unraced at two, his first crop has shown early promise, with the Aidan O’Brien-trained Finest having won a competitive maiden earlier this month, while his sole offering at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale fetched £260,000.
