The Gurkha Filly Gains Maiden Success In Smart Fashion
Kaluz (2f The Gurkha - Wavelet, by Archipenko) produced a smart performance to get off the mark over seven and a half furlongs at Tipperary on Tuesday.
Leading after a furlong, the James Barrett-trained filly was asked to quicken approaching the final furlong and kept on well under Luke McAteer to score by two lengths in comfortable fashion.
Kaluz had shown promise at home, according to her trainer, who said, “It was a lovely opportunity for Kaluz and she always worked like she was a maiden winner. She was always going to stay galloping and she'll be a lovely filly next year. There may be another one in her this year but next year we'll have a right bit of fun with her.”
Owned by Orpen Horses Limited, Kaluz was bred by Kirsten Rausing and comes from the family of top three-year-old Ramruma. She becomes the latest winner by first season sire The Gurkha, whose first crop also includes smart maiden winners trained by Aidan O’Brien, Jessica Harrington, Jean-Claude Rouget and Mark Johnston.
