California Spangle (Starspangledbanner) Makes It Two From Two At Sha Tin

Unbeaten Starspangledbanner Colt Breaks Second Record

California Spangle (3c Starspangledbanner - Pearlitas Passion, by High Chaparral) made it two from two at Sha Tin on Sunday, and even more impressively, broke another track record in the process.

The Tony Cruz-trained bay broke the track record over five furlongs when impressing on debut last month, and stepped up to six furlongs under Neil Callan. Leading from the early stages, he was ridden clear from a furlong and a half out and kept on strongly to score by two and a quarter lengths.

Cruz later revealed that California Spangle will now be gelded, before going on a break ahead of next season. “I think he has a lot of potential, this horse,” he added. “I think he will definitely improve still.”

The exciting colt is owned by Howard Liang Yum Shing and was sold to MC Bloodstock as a yearling for €150,000. The son of Starspangledbanner was bred by M Enright out of a half-sister to Shakespearean.
