Wootton Bassett Colt Battles For Maiden Success

The Archie Watson-trained Southern Voyage (3c Wootton Bassett - Blue Blue Sea, by Galileo) built on a promising debut performance to justify favouritism in Friday’s ten furlong novice stakes at Redcar.

The Clipper Logistics-owned bay finished second in the Wood Ditton Stakes at the start of the season, before showing a dislike for softer ground when finishing fourth at Newmarket.

Stepping up in trip on his third attempt, he soon led under Paul Mulrennan, but was headed approaching the two furlong marker. Rallying to regain the advantage close home, he beat the well-bred Tiger Beetle (Camelot) by a short head, with another five lengths back to the third.

The son of Wootton Bassett was bred by Lady O’Reilly’s Skymarc Farm out of the highly-rated Blue Blue Sea (Galileo).
