Wootton Bassett Colt Follows Up With Group 2 Success
Royal Patronage (2c Wootton Bassett - Shaloushka, by Dalakhani) produced a late surge to land the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday afternoon.
The Mark Johnston-trained bay stepped up to a mile at the weekend, having won his maiden by five lengths and captured the Group 3 Acomb Stakes over seven furlongs. Ridden from two furlongs out, he appeared to find another gear inside the final furlong and powered home to deny Coreobys by a neck on the line. Unconquerable (Churchill) kept on to take third.
“He has got a lot of speed,” the winning trainer remarked. “We almost supplemented him for the Champagne Stakes. There is lots of stamina on the dam's side. It is great that you have a horse you think will stay a mile and a half that has so much speed early on.”
Owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, the son of Wootton Bassett was bred by Emma Capon Bloodstock.
