Wootton Bassett Colt Storms Home In Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere
Camille Pissarro (2c Wootton Bassett – Entreat, by Pivotal) provided Aidan O’Brien with his third Group 1 win of the weekend when coming from last to first in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on Sunday.
Christophe Soumillon settled the twice Group-placed colt at the back of the field and oozed confidence in the straight. Last to come off the bridle, he began to run on strongly from two furlongs out and was ridden to run down Rashabar (Holy Roman Emperor) inside the final furlong. The pair rallied to the line, where Camille Pissarro led by a neck, with another length and three quarters back to the third.
“I think being produced very late was probably the key,” O'Brien commented after the race. “Christophe's given a masterclass, obviously. He loved him. He said he's done everything 100 per cent and he'll get a mile no problem next year.”
O’Brien stated that this would be Camille Pissarro’s final start of the season, adding, “He is a big horse, so he's probably getting better and stronger. We always thought the world of him.”
Brian Meehan, meanwhile, was pleased with Rashabar’s performance. “I’m really proud of him, he’s one of the nicest horses I’ve trained.” The son of Holy Roman Emperor landed the Group 2 Coventry Stakes in June and was last seen finishing second to Whistlejacket (No Nay Never) in the Group 1 Prix Morny.
Camille Pissarro is owned by Coolmore partners with Peter Brant, having been purchased by MV Magnier and White Birch Farm from Clara Stud as a yearling for 1.25million guineas.
