Wootton Bassett Colt Wins Classic Trial In Style
American Flag (3c Wootton Bassett - Tres Americanqueen, by American Post) has connections dreaming of Group 1 glory after posting his third straight win in the Group 3 Prix de Fontainebleau at Longchamp on Sunday.
Yann Barberot’s charge broke his maiden by an impressive six lengths as a juvenile and made a smart return to action in last month’s Listed Prix Omnium II. Sent off favourite for the French Guineas trial, he was switched out to challenge two furlongs from home and ran on well to take second approaching the final furlong. Leading from150 yards out, he was eased down close home to score by two and a half lengths under Christophe Soumillon.
Speaking after the race, a delighted Yann Barberot said, “It could be that I can finally train the top horse I have been dreaming of. This is why we wake up every morning. He has a lovely temperament and does everything easily and it all starts from there.”
On future plans, the trainer added, “First, it will be the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and then the Prix du Jockey Club if he shows us that he can stay.”
