Wootton Bassett Enjoys Fruitful Outing On Second Start
Apples And Bananas (2c Wootton Bassett – Simannka, by Mastercraftsman) built on a promising debut to land Monday’s mile maiden at Killarney.
The Joseph O’Brien-trained colt finished sixth in a seven furlong Curragh maiden last month and was well-supported to build on that effort on his second start. Racing prominently under Dylan Browne McMonagle, he was asked to quicken from two furlongs out and ridden clear inside the final furlong. He ran on well to score by a length and three quarters from Puppet Master (Camelot), while the favourite Saratoga (Camelot) took third.
“He was pretty professional,” trainers’ representative Sean Corby commented. “If you are getting that close in a Curragh maiden (finishing sixth on debut), you are a decent horse and Dylan said he was still green in front and was having a look around. He thinks there is more improvement to come.”
Bred by Phoenix Thoroughbred Limited, Apples And Bananas is owned by MacLennan, Shanahan and Magnier. The son of Wootton Bassett becomes the first winner out of black-type performer Simannka (Mastercraftsman), who hails from the family of Sinndar.
