Wootton Bassett Filly Not To Be Denied In Curragh Group 3
Wootton Bassett was responsible for yet another juvenile Stakes winner on Tuesday when the Aidan O’Brien-trained Whirl (2f Wootton Bassett – Salsa, by Galileo) landed the Group 3 Staffordstown Stud Stakes at the Curragh.
The Coolmore homebred was last seen winning a Class 2 fillies’ maiden at Doncaster and was sent off second favourite as she stepped up to a mile on Tuesday. The bay led after two furlongs and was ridden after the two furlong pole. Digging deep when challenged, she ran on well to win by half a length under Wayne Lordan, while Celtic Motif (Saxon Warrior) was third past the post.
Speaking after the race, O’Brien said, “While just had that bit more experience and she got a lovely ride from Wayne. He went his pace and he was left alone to do it, and she was tough.
“It's amazing with those Wootton Bassett's, one after another they are coming. They just get better the more you train them.”
