Wootton Bassett Juvenile Adds Stakes Success To Unbeaten Record
Wootton City (2f Wootton Bassett - Absolute City, by Elusive City) extended her unbeaten record to three when prevailing in a thrilling finish to the Listed Prix la Fleche at Chantilly.
A debut winner in early May, the Jerome Reynier-trained filly followed up in a Class 2 conditions race and dropped down to five furlongs on Sunday. Drawn wide, Jean-Claude Seroul’s homebred chased the leading group under Mickael Barzalona and was asked to quicken approaching the two furlong marker. Running on strongly inside the final furlong, she led in the shadow of the post to win by a head, as her two nearest rivals dead-heated for second.
Another step up in class may now be on the cards for Wootton City, who is the first foal out of Absolute City. She hails from Wootton Bassett’s first crop bred off €40,000 following outstanding results from limited numbers early in his career. Wootton Bassett’s first crop of just 23 foals produced Group 1 winner Almanzor, while his current five-year-old crop includes 12 Stakes winners.
