Wootton Bassett Sires Second Stakes Winner Of The Week
The progressive Attagirl (2f Wootton Bassett - Catalina Bay, by Pastoral Pursuits) delivered a late challenge to land Saturday’s Listed Julia Garves Roses Stakes at York.
An impressive winner of her maiden last month, the Karl Burke-trained filly was beaten just a head in a Listed sprint last month and remained over the minimum trip at the weekend. Weaving through horses from two furlongs out, Steve Parkin’s homebred was ridden approaching the final furlong and ran on strongly to score by half a length under Danny Tudhope.
Speaking after the race, the winner’s owner/breeder Steve Parkin said, “We weren't going to run Attagirl as she ran just last week at Newbury - and should have won, she drifted and got chinned on the line. But Karl said she was bouncing and she's a big filly, she'll be a three-year-old. It was important to get black type because we own the mare.”
Attagirl becomes Wootton Bassett’s second Stakes winner of this year’s York Ebor Festival, with Royal Patronage (Wootton Bassett) having made all to win the Group 3 Acomb Stakes on Wednesday.
