Classy Calyx Colt Delivers On Debut
Calyx was responsible for another debut winner on Monday when Malc (2c Calyx - Bereka, by Firebreak) justified strong market support in the five furlong Novice Stakes at Carlisle.
Bred by Bearstone Stud, the April-born bay first advertised his talents at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, where he was sold by Knockanglass Stables to Middleham Park Racing for 140,000gns. Sent off joint-favourite on Monday, he raced in touch with the leaders and was shaken up at the two furlong pole. Pushed along approaching the final furlong, he led soon after and was ridden out to win by two and a quarter lengths under Oisin Orr.
Malc is one of eight juveniles from the first crop of Calyxto have achieved six-figure prices at this year's breeze-up sales. The freshman sire's first runners include unbeaten filly Classic Flower, impressive debutante Persian Dreamer, smart Saint-Cloud winner Grand Son Of Calyx and notable newcomer Nellie Leylax.
