Getaway Mare Proves A Class Apart At Listowel
Annie G (5m Getaway - Its Only Gossip, by Lear Fan) proved not for catching when running out a wide margin winner of Monday’s Mares’ Maiden Hurdle at Listowel.
The Henry De Bromhead-trained mare had been placed on her two previous starts over hurdles, most recently behind dual black-type winner Gypsy Island, and was sent off favourite for the two mile contest. Leading from the early stages under Hugh Morgan, she went clear from the second last and won by 23 lengths on the line.
Speaking after the race, the winning rider said, “She was picking up the whole way up the straight and went through the line very strongly.” Co-owner Henry Gallagher added, “It's lovely, great to be here and today is our first time to see her run. We've had winners here and there but this is our first nice filly.”
Gallagher bred and races Annie G in partnership with his brother Richard. The daughter of Grange Stud sire Getaway is a half-sister to black-type performer Westerner Point (Westerner).
