Group 2 Tops Successful Sunday For Maxios

Sunday saw German raider Walderbe (4c Maxios - Waldfee, by Dai Jin) celebrate his second pattern success of the season when rallying to win the Group 2 Premio Jockey Club at San Siro.

A commanding winner of a Group 3 over the mile and a half trip in July, Ralf Rohne’s charge ensured a true stamina test on the heavy ground, as he was ridden to lead by Mickaelle Michel. Ridden approaching the two furlong marker, he was narrowly headed by Nerium (Camelot) inside the final furlong, but dug deep to regain the advantage close home and prevailed by a neck on the line, as they finished six lengths clear of British raider Red Verdon in third.

Speaking after the race, the winning rider said, “He is a very good horse and he likes the heavy ground. He has plenty of stamina and I was very confident, even when Nerium put his head in front.”

Owned by Stall Dusseldorf Fighters, Walderbe was bred by MN Ohlig out of Waldfee, herself a half-sister to three Stakes winners.

Meanwhile, over at Aintree, the Milton Harris-trained Jacamar (5g Maxios - Juvena, by Platini) added to a successful day for his sire when landing the Class 2 hurdle under Paddy Brennan.

Racing towards the back of the field for much of the two and a half mile contest, the bay was shaken up at the second last and made good headway under pressure to lead in the final 110 yards. Staying on strongly, he won by a length from the favourite Strong Glance, who was placed in a Listed hurdle last time out.

There should be more to come from the winner this season, according to Paddy Brennan, who said, “I learned a lot about Jacamar at Fontwell last time and he did it well. He's got plenty of ability and is going the right way.”

Owned by Pegasus Bloodstock, Jacamar was bred by Jurgen Imm and hails from the first crop of Castlehyde Stud recruit Maxios.
