Impressive Four Year Old Kicks Off Terrific Weekend For Getaway
Smiling Getaway (4m Getaway - One More Cookie, by Old Vic) kicked off a super weekend for Grange Stud sire Getaway when drawing 10 lengths clear in Saturday’s Four-Year-Old Mares Maiden at Loughanmore.
The Donnchadh Doyle-trained newcomer was well-supported for the eight-runner race and held a three length advantage turning for home. Running on well under Rob James, she left her rivals to fight for placings.
A €52,000 store sale purchase, Smiling Getaway was bred by Rowland Crellin out of a winning full-sister to Compliance.
The following day at Curraghmore, Kilbunny Pontic (4m Getaway - Littlemissfit, by King’s Theatre) ran out an impressive winner of the Four-Year-Old Mares Maiden under Tom Hamilton.
Locally trained by Richard O’Hara, the bay made all of the running and draw clear from four out, going on to score by 12 lengths. Owned by the Delton Syndicate, the daughter of Getaway was bred by Miceal Anthony Sammon
Shortly afterwards at Galway, bumper winner Lady Temperance (6m Getaway - Easily Gavotte, by Presenting) landed the mares maiden hurdle in the colours of breeder Daniel Furini.
Margaret Mullins’ charge raced in midfield for much of the way under Danny Mullins and made headway approaching the second last. Sweeping past her duelling rivals at the final flight, she kept on well to score by two lengths and three quarters on the line.
Speaking after the race, the winning ride commented, “It was a nice performance and she has always been a decent filly.”
That same afternoon at Wexford, Lunar Display (5m Getaway - Lunar Beauty, by Milan) beat a competitive field to land the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Hurdle under JJ Slevin.
Chasing the leaders for much of the two and a half mile contest, the Joseph O’Brien-trained chesnut made good headway from three out and led before the next. Clear at the final flight, she was ridden out to deny the short-priced favourite by a length and a quarter, as the front pair drew clear of the field.
Bred by Whisperview Trading, Lunar Display has previously earned black-type in a bumper and twice over hurdles.
