Irish Derby winner Santiago to stand under the Coolmore N.H. roster at Castlehyde
The well-bred and good-looking Santiago became a Derby winner, just like his sire Authorized and grandsire Montjeu, when defeating 13 rivals in the Irish Derby-Gr.1. Just eight days earlier he had been an impressive 2¾-length winner of the Queen’s Vase-Gr.2 at Royal Ascot, a race won in recent years by subsequent Classic winner Kew Gardens and the outstanding stayer Stradivarius. As a two-year-old, Santiago was runner-up to subsequent Group 1-winning miler Alpine Star in a seven-furlong maiden at the Galway Festival before scoring over a mile on his next and final start for the season.
Santiago is a half-brother to this year’s Yorkshire Oaks-Gr.1 third La Joconde and his grandam is a half-sister to Gr.1 sire Tamayuz. This is the world famous Allegretta family which is responsible for the outstanding sires Galileo and Sea The Stars, both of which were also Derby winners.
His sire Authorized is a Gr.1 sire on the flat and his leading N.H. performers include the eight-time Grade 1 winner Nichols Canyon and dual Grand National hero Tiger Roll.
“Santiago is a Derby winner with a pedigree full of Derby winners and leading sires. He’s a big, quality individual with a fantastic action, and I’m sure National Hunt breeders will be very impressed when they see him.” said Cathal Murphy.
A fee will be announced at a later date.
