Lust For Glory Kickstarts Double For Getaway

The talented Lust For Glory (6m Getaway - Maisie Presenting, by Presenting) cast top weight and seven rivals aside when running out an easy winner of the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Newcastle on Saturday.

Placed in a Listed race last time out, Nicky Henderson’s charge was sent off the short-priced favourite. Ridden close to the pace by James Bowen, she took the lead at the second last with minimum fuss and strode clear to score by three and a half lengths. Mega Double (Westerner) claimed runners-up honours, 13 lengths clear of the third horse.

Mike Grech, who owns the mare in partnership with Stuart Parkin, commented after the race, “Lust For Glory did it very well in preparation for the Mares' Novice Hurdle Cheltenham. Hopefully she'll get good ground at the festival and go there with a great chance.”

Previously a bumper winner, Lust For Glory gained her first success between the flags, when winning by five lengths at Lisronagh on her sole start for Denis Murphy. So impressive was that win that she subsequently brought £240,000 from Highflyer Bloodstock at the Tattersalls Cheltenham November Sale. Bred by Robert Merrigan, she is the first foal out of her unraced dam.

Later in the day, Some Detail (5g Getaway - You Should Know Me, by Oscar) added to his sire’s haul when taking the bumper at Chepstow. Placed on his two previous starts for Nigel Hawke and Milltown Racing, he faced 14 rivals on his latest start, including €100,000 store purchase Golden Gift.

Kieran Buckley rode the bay to chase the leaders, making his challenge three furlongs out and took the lead inside the final furlong, staying on well to beat the aforementioned pricey purchase by two lengths.

He, too, is the first foal and winner out of the mare and was bred by Liam O’Regan. Bought for €38,000 at the Goffs Landrover Sale, he learnt his trade with Colin Bowe, for whom he finished second in a four-year-old maiden at Inchydoney. He beat Embittered (Fame And Glory) into third on that occasion, and he has gone on to finish third at Grade 2 level.
